The question is simply why it happens so rarely.
To solve this puzzle, Dr. Thaller's says, "We try to emulate the strategies of Nature while remaining as true-to-nature – but as practical – as possible."
1. Heat is used in two forms: actively and passively.
Active means “fever” (with the renowned “Coley’s toxin”) where the whole body is heated.
Passive means “artificially produced heat” which is confined to the tumor and is known as radiofrequency electro-hyperthermia).
The immune system is stimulated by fever.
Tumor cells are killed by passive hyperthermia.
A combination of the two can do both!
2. Viruses: His clinic endeavors to find better and better viruses in order to eliminate the diseased cells ever more quickly – and to protect the healthy cells: the opposite of conventional chemotherapy (which indiscriminately kills friend and foe!).
Dr. Thaller has already made great strides towards this goal: Professor Schirrmacher from the German Cancer Research Institute, Heidelberg, has shown that the strain of Newcastle disease virus we use is the most effective among five comparable strains.1
To make sure as much virus as possible reaches the tumors, they are injected through port systems into those blood vessels that supply the tumors. They are implanted in specialist clinics that are associated with Dr. Thallers special treatment processes.
3. The body’s own immune system: dendritic cells and natural killer cells. They are potentiated in their effectiveness by fever but also by viruses.

 Beyond this coherent approach based on tumor immunology, we are trying to ensure that patients feel at ease in a humane environment. That is the imperative of psycho-oncology. The former St. Maria rectory in Markt Berolzheim provides the best conditions for this in the Altmühltal nature park.

The principle is:
As many homey surroundings as possible and
as many hospital attributes as are absolutely necessary,
i.e. high-tech equipment, such as hyperthermia, leukapheresis and ultrasound machines, are confined to very few rooms. Otherwise it looks just like home: everything made from wood and hand-carved.
 The spirit is not sterile! Sterility only has any meaning in an operating room. Elsewhere sterility creates a hostile atmosphere and reflects a perfection that does nothing at all to serve the purpose of healing. If this were not the case, cancer would have ceased to be a problem. Why, indeed, do sterile clinics fail? Where the tumor burden is very great, it may become necessary to combine orthodox and complementary medical approaches.
For this purpose the clinic offers the whole range of conventional methods (surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy) and modify them so that we hardly see any side effects. Insulin intensifies the effectiveness, making it possible to reduce the chemotherapy to a dose that is not only well tolerated: the patients find they have a hearty appetite and are perfectly comfortable eating up their snack shortly after their infusion. Meanwhile hyperthermia further enhances the effects of chemotherapy. Among the radiation options, what is known as “hyperfractionated radiotherapy” is also used. It enables the single dose to be reduced and is therefore gentler on the healthy cells and more harmful to the cancer cells because the two-phase radiation means the daily dose is higher than with conventional radiotherapy.
The fourfold combination (hyperthermia, hyperfractionated radiotherapy, insulin-potentiated chemotherapy and viral therapy) actually produces an effect in tumors that do not respond sufficiently to each individual aspect of treatment. Research shows that Dr. Thaller's clinic is the only one to offer this combination.

 Once the tumor burden is reduced, it makes sense to create a lasting immunological memory with dendritic cells so that the surveillance cells (specific killer cells) are ready at any time to prevent a flare-up of the cancer.
